PRE-NUPTIAL
TRAINING ACCORDING TO JEWISH LAW FOR
PERSONS
WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
B.
Krauss
This paper will
present a program for pre-nuptial training according to
Jewish law for
religious persons with complex and severe learning
disabilities or
mild retardation. Case examples will be presented. For
religious persons,
due to restriction, emphasis on modesty, and the
strict separation
of the sexes, there is inadequate sex education or
preparation for
marital life within the formal educational system and
often not within
the family. For these orthodox persons there is little
experience of
relationships between the sexes prior to marriage. This
has led to the development
of knowledge and skills in the area of
programs of
pre-nuptial training according to Jewish law. The training
differs according
to the various subgroups within the Orthodox
community but share
a common base including: marital life in Jewish
law, couples
counseling and sex education. Persons with complex and
severe learning
disabilities or mild retardation require the same
preparation as do
all religious couples but tailored to their special
needs. In general
these couples require the same skills as all couples
but with emphasis
on access to information, the ability to deal with
external systems,
access to continued supports.
