Fragile X syndrome is a complex genetic condition associated with a
wide range of developmental and behavioral symptoms in both males
and females. It is the leading inherited cause of intellectual disabilities
in all populations and a significant contributing factor in autism
spectrum disorders. Recent advances in our understanding of the
biological underpinnings of fragile X syndrome offer exciting hope for
targeted medical treatments in the near future. Such treatments will
serve to enhance to the effectiveness of current behavioral and
educational strategies to address the needs of children and adults with
fragile X syndrome. Such biochemically targeted pharmaceuticals may
also prove effective for the broader treatment of autism spectrum
disorders unrelated to fragile X.
