The aim of this paper is to identify and measure factors that
contribute to Arab family quality of life, in Israel. FQOL relates to
specific domains of living, which, in turn, reflect and describe the
degree and nature of a particular family's "good life." Identifying which
factors relate to which aspects of quality of life is a major step toward
the practical application of improving their lives. Method: 150 families
responded to the Family Quality of Life Survey an instrument which
focuses on nine life areas. Each of these areas is explored in relation
to six concepts: Importance, Opportunity for improvement, Initiatives
taken, Attainment, Stability, and Satisfaction. The data is analyzed by
age and type and severity of the disability. Results: The initial results
indicate that families perceive considerable quality in their lives. In
general the families indicate a fair amount of attainment in the
domains and a sense of satisfaction with this attainment. They
indicate to a lesser extent a sense of optimism in future
improvements. Arab society is a minority in Israel with different cultural
traditions than the predominantly Jewish population. The results will
be discussed also along the cross cultural issues. Conclusion: This
study provides important information in identifying needs and
supporting families that have a member with ID.
